Pre-screen the card
Check centering, corners, edges and surface under good light. Borderline cards may not reach the grade you need.
Choose a company and service level
Pick PSA for maximum resale, BGS for sub-grades, or CGC for value and speed, then a service tier that fits the card's value and how fast you need it.
Submit safely
Use protective sleeves and semi-rigid holders, follow the company's submission form and packing rules, and insure valuable shipments.
Track the value after grading

Grade cards where the graded price minus the raw price comfortably exceeds the grading fee and shipping, and where the card is in strong enough condition to earn a high grade. Valuable holos, chase cards and vintage in near-mint condition are the usual candidates. Bulk and heavily played cards rarely justify the cost.
Graders judge centering, corners, edges and surface. Under good light and magnification, check the centering front and back, look for whitening on corners and edges, and inspect the surface for scratches or print lines. If a card clearly falls short on any of these, a top grade is unlikely, and grading may not pay off.
